Your home thermostat’s best location
You want the thermostat to be on an interior wall, away from sources of heat and cold.
Windows, doors, outside walls, clothes dryers, kitchens, bathrooms and televisions all can affect the temperature reading of the thermostat. Better to be in an area that is more neutral and more likely to deliver a temperature that works for your entire home or business.
“Putting your thermostat in any of these less-than-ideal spots could force it into heating or cooling when it doesn't actually need to, unnecessarily using up more energy and money,” says cnet.com, a popular site for consumer information.
Your best choice may be the living room.
“The best spot for your thermostat is on an interior wall in the middle of a room you use often, such as your living room. That will keep the most popular areas of your house comfortable at the temperature you set,” cnet.com said.
And if you have a smart thermostat, beware of doors and other factors that could disrupt the signal.
Moving a thermostat
You are not stuck for life with a thermostat in the wrong location.
A thermostat often can be moved to a better site, but unless you’re an accomplished do-it-yourselfer you will be wise to hire a contractor who handles heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. The long-term utility savings may outweigh the cost of the move.
