Thermocouple may cause pilot light failure in gas furnace
Your pilot light is out and it won’t restart. Or it restarts, only to die out again.
Check the thermocouple. It’s a rod that serves as a valuable safety mechanism. If it can’t detect the pilot light, it shuts down the furnace to prevent gas from getting into your home or business.
Two possible causes for the thermocouple to malfunction:
• Like many devices, a thermocouple can break or wear out. Fortunately it’s not an especially expensive fix.
• Dirt can accumulate on the thermocouple and stop it from working. Usually a good cleaning will bring the thermocouple back to working order. The thermocouple is one of many items that should be checked every year before cold weather arrives and you need the furnace.
