Filters pay results

First, the most important maintenance task: replace or clean your air filters to maximize your system’s efficiency. When filters get dirty, they restrict airflow and significantly efficiency.

“In addition, when airflow is obstructed, air can bypass the filter and deposit dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil's heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by 5% to 15%,” says the federal agency.

Clean those coils, too

The air conditioner's evaporator coil and condenser coil may collect dirt, which reduces airflow and inhibits the coil from absorbing heat.

The coils in your outside unit also collect dirt, especially if the air is laden with particles or the foliage is too close. Cut shrubs if need to give the outside unit a clearance of at least two feet to allow adequate airflow.

Check condensate drain

To avoid clogs, periodically run a stiff wire through the condensate unit's drain channels. Clogged drains add to humidity and can discolor carpet or walls.
