Is your new HVAC system a dud?
You spend a bunch of money to install a new HVAC system that will significantly improve your family’s current and hold the line on energy costs, too.
But it doesn’t. Oh, it works, but nowhere as good as you were led to believe.
There are several reasons why new systems limp along rather than transform your home or office for the better with heating, ventilation and cooling.
• It could be a size issue, caused by improper calculation of the demands for the system. Your contractor should consider numerous factors before recommending a certain size.
Too small and it can’t do the job. Too big and it causes humidity and requires more energy while turning on and off too often.
• It may be something simple but obvious, such as the thermostat’s location. The thermostat drives the system, but it will be out of sync with the rest of the house if it’s in an unusually hot or cold spot.
For example, the thermostat is unwisely placed between the kitchen and the laundry room, where equipment frequently in use will raise the nearby temperature but not affect the rest of the home. Or it’s placed near a drafty window. Either way, the thermostat is incorrectly triggered.
• Bad ductwork means that not all the heated or cooled air gets to your rooms. Instead, some dribbles out through leaks, holes and improperly sealed areas.
This is why it’s almost always smart longterm to install new ducts with a new HVAC system. As ducts age they develop sags and gaps, just like humans!
• Poor placement of outdoor units will impede AC operations. You want a space that draws limited sun yet is free of shrubbery that can interfere with airflow.
An experienced HVAC contractor will know how to avoid these mistakes and other challenges, such as vent location, incorrect wiring and refrigerant leaks.
Then your HVAC dud will blossom into a heating/cooling delight!
