Is it an HVAC emergency? Or, can it wait?

Some HVAC “emergencies” are very obvious. The heat dies and the temperature outside is 20 degrees and falling. Or refrigerant is leaking, introducing toxic gas to your indoor air and threatening major damage to your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The flame on the gas heater is yellow instead of blue. The carbon monoxide alarm is telling you there’s a leak. Or the circuit breaker won’t stop breaking.

These are clearcut signs of a potential emergency and the need to immediately turn off the system and call an experienced HVAC professional.

Not so urgent

Other cases may be inconveniences more than emergencies.

Say the AC or heat dies, but the temps outside are moderate and you feel you will be fine until regular business hours. (Don’t be so casual if your household includes infants, seniors or people with serious breathing issues.)

Likewise, a minor change in airflow will require professional attention, but you probably can wait to schedule a tech when it’s convenient to you.

Seek advice

Still, don’t be shy about calling for advice. A veteran HVAC pro often can listen to your dilemma and determine whether you should act now or wait.
