HVAC maintenance in snowstorms
When you’re shoveling snow off the sidewalk, take a few minutes to check the outside unit of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
Don’t let snow or ice build up on or beside the unit. Otherwise the system may shut down. Not only will you and your family be cold, but there will be a bigger chance that the water pipes inside may start to freeze – and maybe burst.
Make sure the unit has a couple feet of “breathing room” around the sides. This includes clearing ice and snow from the air intake vent and the exhaust.
Outside units can withstand a lot of wintry abuse, but you can extend its life by clearing away snow, ice, vegetation and debris.
