Energy-saving tips for your water heater
The sweet spot for your water heater is 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
“This temperature is hot enough to meet household needs while minimizing energy consumption and reducing the risk of scalding accidents, particularly for children and the elderly,” says the Department of Energy.
One example: If your temperature now is set at 14o degrees and you dial it down to 120 degrees, you can save $400 per year, the EPA says.
In addition, the lower temperature puts less strain on the system and slows corrosion and buildup of sediment.
“High temperatures can accelerate wear and tear on the heater’s components as well, which can lead to increased risks of leaks, corrosion, and premature failure. Excessive heat can also cause mineral buildup and reduce the heater’s efficiency over time,” the EPA noted.
Hot water takes some of your monthly budget. About 18 percent of your energy use goes to heat water.
You also can shave costs by turning the system further down or off while on vacation or at work.
