4 signs your thermostat is failing
The thermostat for your heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system may be leaving you clues that it’s about to die.
• The HVAC system is turning off and on – short-cycling – much too often.
• The temperature shown on the thermostat doesn’t match the temperature you feel in your home or business. You’re colder or warmer than the thermostat says is the temperature. Or some rooms are noticeably warmer or cooler than other areas.
• The thermostat isn’t as quick to respond as it once was. You set the desired temperature but the thermostat is slow to respond or, worse yet, it doesn’t respond at all.
Age expectation
Generally a thermostat will serve for about 10 years before failing.
On the good side, those 10 years or so have seen huge technological strides. New thermostats offer many advanced features, including remote control, programming options and other steps that help you increase the energy efficiency of your HVAC system.
